How to make your refurbished device last longer

Start with the right device

Choose a model that still receives security updates and has replacement parts available. A slightly newer refurbished device often lasts longer than the cheapest available unit because batteries, screens and spare parts remain easier to find.

Battery care

Batteries are the most common reason devices feel old. To slow degradation:

• Avoid keeping the battery at 100% or 0% for long periods.
• Use the charger supplied or a certified alternative.
• Keep the device out of direct heat.
• For phones and laptops, consider replacing the battery after two to three years of heavy use.

Software and storage

Install operating-system and security updates while they are supported. Remove apps you no longer use and keep some free storage space. A device that runs smoothly is more likely to stay in use.

Physical protection

A case and screen protector reduce the risk of drops and scratches. For laptops, a padded sleeve and a keyboard cover help. Small damage is easier to prevent than to repair.

Cleaning

Dust in ports, fans and speaker grilles can cause overheating or poor sound. Clean gently with compressed air and a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid liquids near openings.

Repairs and upgrades

Before replacing a device, check whether a repair makes sense. Replacing a battery, screen or storage can be far cheaper than a new purchase and avoids the impact of manufacturing another device. For desktops and some laptops, adding memory or storage is an easy upgrade.

When to let go

If software support has ended, repairs cost more than a replacement, or the device no longer meets your needs, pass it on or recycle it responsibly. Many retailers and local councils accept old electronics.
