The Refurbished iPad Buying Guide

Which iPad model holds up in 2026, how much battery health to demand, and the chip generations to avoid.

TL;DR

For most people in 2026, the sweet spot is a refurbished iPad Air (M1, 2022) or iPad Pro 11" (M1). Both will receive iPadOS updates for years and undercut a new base iPad by a meaningful margin while delivering a far better screen and chip.

What "refurbished iPad" actually means

iPads are easier to refurbish well than laptops — fewer moving parts, sealed batteries, and Apple's diagnostic tooling makes it straightforward to verify a clean unit. The risks are concentrated in three areas:

  • Battery health — iPads do not expose it in Settings the way iPhones do. Reputable refurbishers test cycle count and capacity with third-party tools.
  • Screen — uniformity issues, dead pixels, and Pencil digitiser response are not always obvious in photos.
  • Activation lock — make sure the unit is unlocked from the previous Apple ID before you pay.

Chip generations to know

What to demand on the listing

  • Battery health ≥85% for any model less than 4 years old.
  • No activation lock confirmed in writing.
  • Pencil compatibility tested if you plan to draw or take handwritten notes.
  • Cellular models: IMEI provided, no carrier lock.
  • Original Lightning or USB-C cable included (third-party is fine, no cable is not).

Storage: do not skimp

iPads cannot be upgraded. 64GB fills up the moment you install a couple of pro apps and shoot any video. Aim for 256GB minimum on a Pro, 128GB minimum on an Air or base iPad. The refurbished market often has 256GB and 512GB units at prices very close to 64GB — that is where the real value sits.

Grade guidance

  • Grade A / Excellent — pay the premium if this is a daily-driver creative tool.
  • Grade B / Good — best price/performance for general use; light cosmetic marks invisible in a case.
  • Grade C — fine for kids, kitchen tablets, or sheet music; you will see the wear.

Accessories: buy refurbished too

Apple Pencil (2nd gen) and Magic Keyboard hold up well refurbished and can cost 40–60% less than new. Confirm tip wear on the Pencil and key responsiveness on the keyboard.

When to skip refurbished

If you need the newest M4 Pro with the OLED screen, refurbished discounts are still modest. Wait six months after release for the secondary market to mature.
